When to Choose Spring vs Pilot-Operated
The choice between a conventional spring-loaded valve and a pilot-operated PSV usually comes down to four factors:
- Operating-to-set pressure ratio. Spring valves are best below 90% of set; above that, pilot-operated valves stay seated more reliably and prevent simmer.
- Backpressure variability. Pilot-operated valves can be balanced to handle high or variable backpressure without losing capacity.
- Service severity. Spring valves win on dirty or polymerising services because there are no small pilot passages to clog.
- Maintenance philosophy. Spring valves are simpler to overhaul on site; pilot-operated valves often require returning the pilot to a workshop.
A short selection workshop usually pays for itself many times over in avoided downtime. Contact our engineering team to discuss your application.
