When to Choose Spring vs Pilot-Operated

The choice between a conventional spring-loaded valve and a pilot-operated PSV usually comes down to four factors:

  1. Operating-to-set pressure ratio. Spring valves are best below 90% of set; above that, pilot-operated valves stay seated more reliably and prevent simmer.
  2. Backpressure variability. Pilot-operated valves can be balanced to handle high or variable backpressure without losing capacity.
  3. Service severity. Spring valves win on dirty or polymerising services because there are no small pilot passages to clog.
  4. Maintenance philosophy. Spring valves are simpler to overhaul on site; pilot-operated valves often require returning the pilot to a workshop.

A short selection workshop usually pays for itself many times over in avoided downtime. Contact our engineering team to discuss your application.
